Project Background

A leading energy company in Peru has entrusted Penspen with the critical task of safeguarding their pipeline and associated facilities from corrosion over a three-year period. The project encompasses both external and internal corrosion protection, including inspection and monitoring of the pipeline’s cathodic protection system, corrosion rate measurements, electrical assessments, and the optimisation of chemical treatments.

Services

To provide tailored corrosion monitoring services, Penspen has partnered with the Peruvian company Servicorrosion to form a temporary consortium – PENSCORR – specialising in corrosion monitoring to serve our client and meet their project requirements.

To further support the project, we have launched Penspen’s first in-house corrosion laboratory in Peru, which provides sampling and analysis, measuring key factors like chlorides, sulfates, pH levels, and corrosion rates in metal samples to support the project and client.

Utilising the laboratory, we are carrying out extensive work on external corrosion protection for the main pipeline and stations, as well as inspecting inspecting and monitoring the cathodic protection system, using sacrificial anodes and impressed current methods. Other key activities include performing potential measurements with the Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS) technique, conducting current requirement tests at stations, pipes, and pontoons, and monitoring electrical parameters. This work is supported by Penspen’s specialists with NACE CP-4 certification, ensuring the highest level of technical support for our client.

For internal corrosion, we are actively monitoring the physical, chemical, and microbiological conditions of water samples from our client’s storage tanks and scrapper traps. This process involves measuring corrosion rates using test tubes and coupons, replacing these components as needed, and providing expert technical support to optimise anticorrosive chemical treatments.

Result

Although this project is in its initial phase, Penspen’s approach is designed to deliver long-term benefits over a three-year period. By focusing on best practices and innovative solutions, we are providing effective corrosion monitoring and management that will optimise our client’s pipeline assets and reduce costs whilst enhancing safety over time. Penspen is committed to leveraging our corrosion expertise to deliver high-quality services to our client and the wider energy industry.
