Project Background

Recently, Penspen were awarded an engineering contract by an EPC contractor in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) to harness the region’s abundant natural gas resources to fuel industrial growth. The project involves the construction of a new industrial gas pipeline, with the following specifications:

  • Nominal pipe size simulations: various diameters.
  • Flow type: Free flow pipeline.
  • Selected pipe diameter: designed for a 200 MMSCFD flow rate.

Services

Led by Penspen’s engineering team in the Middle East, this project involves concept and pre-FEED engineering for the construction of a new gas pipeline which will transport dry natural gas from a local power plant to an industrial zone in Iraq. The new gas pipeline will cover an estimated length of 24km and is to be designed to meet the flow requirements for gas delivery to multiple industrial consumers in the region.

Other key services involved in the scope of work include:

  • Pipeline design and routing: Engineering and optimisation of a 24km gas pipeline route.
  • Power plant tie in station: Installation of custody transfer metering skid and set up of pig launcher for pipeline cleaning.
  • Industrial zone receiving station: Installation of pressure reducing metering skid and set up of pig received, control room, and distribution manifold.
  • Fast-track FEED (Front-End Engineering Design): Prioritisation of long-lead items, including the pipeline and metering skids, to meet tight project deadlines.

Result

Scheduled for completion by mid 2025, this project will leverage Penspen’s 70+ years of expertise in pipeline engineering to support our client in constructing a safe and efficient gas pipeline, which once operational will provide improved energy security and higher levels of industrial development in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Arun Behl, Director of Sales & Marketing for the Middle East & Africa: In line with our commitment to supporting regional development, Penspen is delighted to be providing engineering services for a new industrial gas pipeline in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG). This strategic project aims to supply gas to drive emerging industries and foster economic growth in the region which we are proud to be a part of by utilising our extensive experience in pipeline engineering.”
