Celebrated on August 28th, Emirati Women’s Day showcases the pivotal role that women continue to play in the growth and success of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Established with the aim of promoting female empowerment and inspiring future generations of Emirati women, 2024 marks the ninth annual Emirati Women’s Day, originally founded by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, the Mother of the Nation.

To mark this year’s theme – We Share For Tomorrow – some of Penspen’s graduates at our Abu Dhabi office offered their insights into being an Emirati woman in energy and their advice for future generations.

Noura Almenhali, Graduate Civil Engineer

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My biggest inspiration is my mother,” says Noura.

“Her ability to balance personal and professional life with such finesse has always amazed me. She didn’t just tell me that anything is possible; she showed me through her actions.”

What advice would you give to the future women of energy in the Emirates?

“To the future women of energy, I would say that the path you choose will be challenging, but that’s what makes it worthwhile. Don’t just aim to fit into the existing frameworks—be bold enough to question and reshape them.

“The energy sector needs your innovative spirit and unique perspective more than ever, especially as we transition towards sustainable solutions. Seize every learning opportunity, but also remember to carve out your own niche, where you can make the most impact.”

What would you say to your younger self?

“I’d tell my younger self that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. I didn’t always see myself in engineering, but life has a way of revealing your true passions through experiences and challenges.

“Every obstacle you face will teach you something invaluable, and those lessons will become your greatest strengths. Stay true to your values, be patient with yourself, and trust that you are on the right path even when it doesn’t seem like it.”

Sara Alyammahi, Graduate Business Development Officer

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My biggest inspiration is Shamma Al Mazrui,” says Sara. “She was the youngest female minister in the world when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum appointed her Minister of State for Youth Affairs in the UAE, showing that young people have the opportunity to work hard, and that we can be ambitious.”

What advice would you give to the future women of energy in the Emirates?

“Never give up – everything comes at the right time. Work hard, because that’s what leads to success.”

What would you say to your younger self?

“I would tell myself to be patient, and wait for the right chance.”

Shamsa Alsaadi, Graduate Mechanical Engineer

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My biggest inspiration is Noura Al Kaabi,” says Shamsa, referring to the Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and former Minister of Culture and Youth.

“Her remarkable achievements as a pioneering leader in the energy sector, coupled with her dedication to advancing technology and innovation, serve as a powerful example of what can be accomplished with vision and perseverance. Al Kaabi’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and her role in shaping the future of energy in the Emirates resonate deeply with me.

“Her success not only highlights the impact of strategic leadership but also underlines the importance of empowering women in technical fields. Her journey is a testament to breaking barriers and leading with purpose, and it continually motivates me to strive for excellence and contribute meaningfully to the energy industry.”

What advice would you give to the future women of energy in the Emirates?

“Dive deeply into technical disciplines. The more knowledge and skills you acquire, the more you’ll be able to influence the industry. And enjoy the process of learning and problem-solving, because that technical expertise will be a powerful tool in your career.

“Connect with experienced professionals, join industry groups, and find mentors who can guide and support you. Encourage and support other women to enter and thrive in the field, because a diverse team can drive more creative solutions and a more equal industry. And don’t shy away from celebrating your successes and sharing your journey. Your accomplishments can inspire others and pave the way for future generations of women in energy.

What would you say to your younger self?

“It’s great that you’re curious and eager to learn. You might not have imagined yourself in the field of engineering just yet, but keep nurturing that curiosity and love for solving problems – it’s going to lead you to some exciting places.

It’s not always been an easy journey, but the challenges faced along the way have been instrumental in shaping who I am and what I’ve achieved. And remembering that initial sense of wonder and excitement – it helps keep the journey meaningful and rewarding.”

Shaikha Alteneiji, Graduate IT Officer

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan inspires me through his steadfast determination and resilience in the face of challenges. His journey demonstrates that success is attainable through patience and diligent effort.”

What advice would you give to the future women of energy in the Emirates?

“Be a leader in energy transition,” suggests Shaikha. “As the world moves away from fossil fuels, your role is vital. Stay informed about new trends and be a voice for progress.

“Enjoy learning – technical subjects can be tough, but they’re also rewarding. Be proud of mastering complex ideas and using them to solve real-world problems.”

What would you say to your younger self?

“Face challenges head-on. The path won’t be easy, but each challenge will make you stronger. Don’t be afraid to tackle them. Keep learning and never stop being curious – it will open up new opportunities.

“Dream big and believe in yourself – you have what it takes, so trust your abilities and know that you can achieve great things and make a real impact.”

Fatima Abdulla Alkhateri, Graduate Mechanical Engineer

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My mother is the most caring and giving person I have ever known,” says Fatima. “Balancing the demands of a career – as a maths teacher – while nurturing a family showcases incredible resilience.”

What advice would you give to the future women of energy in the Emirates?

“Stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in the energy sector and pursue your passion for energy with continuous learning.

“By seizing opportunities, you not only pave the way for your own success but also inspire and empower other women to pursue careers in engineering and make a difference in the energy industry.”

What would you say to your younger self?

“You did well, and I am proud of what you have become. I would say to stay curious, never stop learning and embrace challenges so you can reach your goals”

Maryam Aldhanhani, Junior Electrical Engineer

Who is your biggest inspiration?

“My biggest inspiration is my brother. He always encouraged me to pursue my interests and never gave up on me, even when things got tough,” says Maryam.

“His wisdom and unwavering support have been a guiding light in my life, shaping me into the person I am today.”

What advice would you give to the future women of energy in the Emirates?

“Embrace the incredible opportunities to make a significant impact on the future of energy. You can help create a more inventive and sustainable energy landscape by actively engaging in the energy transition.

“Women can break down barriers and succeed in technical professions by pursuing careers in engineering. There are great opportunities to be at the forefront of ground-breaking innovations in the energy sector and to make a real impact.”

What would you say to your younger self?

“Working in engineering has been a fulfilling journey that I didn’t initially imagine for myself,” explains Maryam.

“It became a passion as I discovered the impact that engineering can have on the world. Along the way, I’ve faced and overcome various challenges – each one shaping me into a stronger and more resilient individual.

“Embracing these challenges has been key to my growth and success in the field of engineering.
